Malaika Opens Doors in Modelling Industry

The Zimbabwean modeling industry will soon be boasting of massive sponsorship if donors who vowed to support Beauty Queens stand up to their promises. This development was unmasked during Miss Zimbabwe Malaika Mushandu’s return press conference held at a local hotel on November 15, 2011.

Right: Malaika Mushandu told aspiring models that, no matter what platform you get, be patriotic about what you do.

Edgars Brand and Marketing Manager Mrs. Rita Chinyoka who spoke on behalf of other sponsors vowed that they were willing to take part in pageant shows citing, “clearly we would like to be involved. We are in the business of doing that making sure that the girls look good,” she said.

Mrs. Chinyoka also called for support from the private sector when she said, “I hope next year more sponsors will come out to support Miss Zimbabwe. We call on more sponsors to come on board.”

She added that they were going to proceed with their support for Malaika even though she did not manage to bring the Miss World crown back home, “we will continue to support you in whatever you do. This is just the beginning and not the end.”

Speaking at the same occasion Chairperson of the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) Board Mrs. Marah Hativagone challenged the government and the private sector saying, “we hope our Government through its various departments and the private sector will continue supporting such initiatives bent on promoting the girl child and the goodness of the country in general,” said Hativagone.

National Patron of Miss Zimbabwe Trust Kiki Divaris who referred to herself as the “oldest woman in the house” echoed the same sentiments when she said government through ZTA has played a crucial role in making the Miss Zimbabwe pageant show a success.

A composed Malaika paid tribute to her fellow Zimbabweans for a tremendous support they had shown to her while she was away in England, “The title I carry is not for me. The achievement I did in England was because of the support from each and every Zimbabwean.”

Malaika also highlighted that she learned a lot of things during the Miss World competitions and chief among them she, “learned that the knowledge we gain is not for individual benefit but to use it to benefit other people.”

Just after the press briefing, Zimbo jam caught up with Malaika who had a message for aspiring models, which is, “No matter what platform you get, be patriotic about what you do.”

Malaika reiterated that the future of the modeling industry in Zimbabwe will improve if, “Sponsors keep on coming on board and the media as well should keep on supporting this industry so that it keeps growing.”
Malaika who qualified at number 9 in the Miss World said that she will continue with her modeling career while advancing her studies in Environmental Science with a focus in Ecology.

Commenting on her challenges while in London she cited, “it was a case of culture and barrier of languages where one required an interpreter who were not available all the times.”

Meanwhile, Miss Tourism Zimbabwe Rumbidzai Mudzengerere is leaving for China on the 28th of December for the Miss Tourism Queen grand finals while her counterpart Miss Universe Lisa Morgan who clinched the Miss Ambassador of Beauty and Miss Expressive 2011 titles in Chengdu, China is back in Zimbabwe on November 16, 2011.
